Bingo is a game that has an interesting history. It can be traced all the way back to the 1500's where it began as an Italian lottery. The game grew and changed to being played more commonly and in more areas, it was referred to by the name of Beano. Beano had finally made its way to America where it was played at a carnival which took place in Atlanta. It was there that a traveling salesman by the name of Edwin S. Lowe was in the area in December of 1929 and witnessed the game taking place. He tried to play himself, but he couldn't get a seat so he settled for watching others play the game instead. The game made quite an impression on Lowe and he began playing it back in New York. He played the game with dried beans, cardboard, and a rubber stamp. Lowe saw how much of an impression the game made on those who played it. It was then that he decided it needed some changes and he began his journey. While Lowe was hosting a game one of the women had become so excited that she stuttered out the word and ended up yelling out "Bingo" instead of beano and this is how the game got its name change. |

As the game began to become more popular, a priest began using it as a way to raise money for the church. This priest came to Lowe and mentioned to him that the game was limited due to the fact that it only had 24 unique cards to play with. This is when Lowe requested the help of a mathematician. He wanted Bingo to have a larger number of card combinations; he began working with a mathematician named Carl Leffler. Increasing the odds and combinations in the game is just what the game needed to really take off. Churches across the United States began holding bingo fund raising events and bingo took off. The growth of bingo is impressive; this game has withstood the test of time and become a household word.
